The Cat Who Thought She Was a Dog and the Dog Who Thought He Was a Cat {pg 6-11 Purple hard cover}

What would it be like to think that you were a complete opposite of yourself? In this story we meet Burek and Kot. They are the dog and cat of a family in poverty. Their owners are Jan Skiba, his wife Marianna and their 3 daughters. Once this mirror of luxury comes into their home it turns them inside out. The comic plotline and symbolism together with the realism of this story teach us the moral lesson of learning solving our own problems. Previously to then they had no problem but the mirror.

The plotline of the story “The Cat Who Thought She Was a Dog and the Dog Who Thought He Was a Cat” perfectly fits that of comic literature. In the beginning it was like their whole life. It was a normal day they were thinking that they were the opposite species and acting like it. Soon the main characters owner caused a minor conflict. They bought a mirror and put it up right away. That conflict is realized when they look at themselves and found things wrong with themselves, they tried hiding it or fixing it but that didn’t work out because they don’t have enough money. Next they solved the conflict by giving the mirror back to the salesman and got their money back. Finally it was back to everyday life and that makes you feel you can solve anything.

In addition to the plotline fitting the comic mode of literature, so does the symbolism found in the story. At all times it was sunny they never did anything involving the night. Also whenever they did something it was day time. Pets are a huge part in comic literature. In the story there were 2 pets which illustrate the idea of comic literature.

Finally, in the story “The Cat Who Thought She Was a Dog and the Dog Who Thought He Was a Cat” the main characters lives are in control. The mother, by finding a way to get rid of the mirror. Jan, the father by giving the pets a good life. Then the pets by not hurting each other when they didn’t know what they were.

The story “The Cat Who Thought She Was a Dog and the Dog Who Thought He Was a Cat” portrays a happy family, finding new opportunities through hard times. Through the use of symbolism the author lets us as readers identify with the troubles that the real world brings and how we have to work together with the people we love or hate and resolve those problems. When there is resolution, the comic cycle is complete and the reader experiences happiness and grateful for those people involved.
